Puzzles, Cakes and GPS

I am a big picture thinker! It’s easy for me to get bogged down in the details and to lose sight of what I’m doing if I don’t keep the end goal in mind. I despise doing something haphazardly just for the sake of doing it.

PUZZLES

When I do a puzzle, for example, I don’t open the box, cast it aside and start randomly putting the pieces together. No, I open  the box, look over the picture of what the puzzle should look like when I’m done, and THEN start putting puzzle pieces together.

We can rest in the fact that God knows what the puzzle of our lives should look like. He created the picture on the box after all, and none of the pieces are missing! 😊

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end (Ecc 3:11).”

CAKES

When I bake a cake, I don’t just arbitrarily dump some random ingredients from my cupboard into a bowl and hope I get a cake.  The ingredient list is very specific! Specific ingredients for a specific kind of cake.

As as a little girl, I remember sneaking into my mom’s cupboard where she kept all her baking supplies. I took a huge spoonful of Hershey’s cocoa powder. I almost threw up! I didn’t realize that the cocoa wasn’t sweet (or even edible) until ALL the ingredients were mixed together. All I knew was that she put Hershey’s cocoa into the bowl, and then I licked the beaters. (Yes, I licked the beaters, and I’m still alive to tell about it!) Each ingredient by itself was awful! But when mixed together made a delicious cake.

God knows everything we go through in life is not particularly “pleasant” to us, but He also knows the bigger picture and what kind of character He wants to work in us.

“God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them (Romans 8:28).”

GPS

When I use my GPS to help me navigate how to get somewhere unfamiliar to me, I usually like to look at the “overview” of where I’m headed, and THEN I can be confident in following each direction Siri gives me. GPS (Global Positioning System) operates accurately and efficiently because there are 30 satellites orbiting above earth at 20,000km that are able to pinpoint where we are at any given moment. Ancient sailors used the constellations to help them navigate the seas. Today when wanting to go from Point A to Point B, we just need a handheld GPS device.

Isaiah 55 says, “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

He is more able to pinpoint exactly where we are in life and how to get us where He wants us. He is trustworthy in directing our lives. Sometimes there’s heavy traffic that requires patience, and sometimes He takes us on detours, but we can trust Him and His direction.

I know it sounds ridiculously elementary, especially since I went to Bible college, but the other day I realized God is a big picture thinker, too. Even more so than I am! He is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.

God is ALWAYS speaking! Are we listening? Do we trust Him to not lose any of our puzzle pieces? Do we trust Him to combine all the ingredients in our lives to make something beautiful? Do we trust Him to give us directions even if it’s not the route we would have chosen?
